AERC and the BLM Wild Horse & Burro Program are arranging for
tours of the Palomino Wild Horse & Burro Facility in Reno during
the AERC Convention. Last year we had a kind of informal tour
situation set up and those who made it were impressed with the
horses, their maintenance and care, and the “break” from the
casino. The tours will be guided and will include viewing the many
different horses and burros (of all ages); feeding, trimming, care
activities: some training methods for the wild stock; and history
of the BLM wild horses and burros. Some of us who toured the
facility last year were with relatives of members who were not
“horse people” and they were as impressed as we were - it will be
a great and entertaining part of the AERC Convention experience,
as well as an opportunity to get out in the fresh air among horses :^)
We are putting this notice out for your information and to get an
idea of how many members attending Convention would be interested
in taking one of the several tours we are arranging. We are
working on a schedule of times for both Friday and Saturday (they
close at noon on Saturday), getting buses or shuttles for those
who don’t have their own vehicle (you are welcome to take your own
transportation if you wish) and, to that end, it is important to
have an idea of how many members would like to spend about an hour
and a half doing this.
Please reply to both Randy Eiland at renegade12@juno.com and Patti
Pizzo at Piz220@epix.net if you wish to participate and be put on
the list.
Thanks,
Randy

Although Christmas is almost a month off - it’s still very close
if you want to get an endurance related gift for a friend or yourself.
Julie Suhr’s inspirational book “10 Feet Tall, Still” is described at
http://www.endurance.net/juliesuhr/
“Julie Suhr is an inspiration to all endurance riders. Everyone of
us said at one time or another— “I want to be like Julie when I’m
75.†This book about a remarkable woman and her horses is well
worth reading.â€Â Becky Hart
Note also that
“All profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the
American Endurance Ride Conference Trails Committee
and the Western States Trail Foundation Trails Committee.”
Ordering information is at the website above.

This year it seems particularly difficult to find a good date for the convention - with all the early season rides. This year the SERA convention will be 26 Jan 2008. Put it on you calender today.
Keep tuned to this blog and the Newsletter for additional details.

This has been one of the hottest and driest summers I remember in the SE. Everybody seems to be trying to escape the heat. Jody is running around carrying water to her cows - since all the ponds are dry.
But………..cooler weather and the fall season is just a week or so away. It starts with the Big South Fork and just keeps going. It doesn’t get much better. This year we are blessed with ride after ride in the fall.
Get the horses out and get them legged up. Even if you can’t do a 50 - go do a 25 to get them ready for a 50 on the next one.
Cooler weather and great rides are just around the corner.

The DHC has been approved to be an elevator ride. If you are thinking about entering the 50 but not quite sure if you should. You can enter the 25, then if you feel like you would like to elevate to the 50 you can do so. Â
so who’s planning to go to big south fork?
what about the hundred - i know jody and joni and debra are entering - who else?
is anyone doing the ride and tie - i’m going to try to - 30 miles on sat

The chiropractor examined my horse last week and pronounced her †a messâ€, just what I wanted to hear. Anyhow, he has told me to take her home, don’t ride her for a couple of months, and start training her to round her back and use her rear. Tiki was given to me off the racetrack with rear end problems and has seemingly done great these last 7 years. We average 30 to 40 miles a week, with almost all of our riding done in the mountains. I’m pretty well devastated and don’t really know where to start. The thought of arena riding bores me, so I put her in a surcingle and draw reins and took her riding with me and let her run loose for 11 miles yesterday. I probably kept the draw reins attached for maybe 2-3 miles and she accepted it okay. I did notice that without me on her back she kept her head and neck down much better than when I ride her. I know you guys are going to say dressage lessons and I have put in a call to a facility but I’ve never had a lesson in my life and don’t even use my legs on my horse. Isn’t there something easier than a complete makeover? Any suggestions? Linda Norton in SE TN.
