The Southeast Region has produced many accomplished members, perhaps none more so than Lawton Johnston of Graniteville, South Carolina. Lawton was well known as a consummate competitor who ended his career with 13,775 miles, 46 1-day 100s and an overall ride record of 173 starts with 164 completions over his 20+ year endurance career and induction into AERC’s Hall of Fame. Lawton was equally well known as someone who gave back to the sport he loved. He and his wife Frances put on the Graniteville Gallop ride for many years and he was a friend and mentor to everyone who knew him. The Southeast and the sport of endurance lost Lawton to cancer in 2000 not long after he attempted to complete his 47th 1-day 100 at Biltmore. In 2001 SERA established the Lawton Johnston Award in his memory. It is awarded at the President’s pleasure to someone who epitomizes our sport and embodies all that Lawton taught us. |
